When is PLA the right material?

PLA is the right pick for models, decor, gifts and architecture — anywhere clean visuals and fine detail matter, without sustained heat or outdoor exposure. We print PLA at our Vienna shop in many colors and special finishes, often same-day.

What is PETG best for?

PETG is for everyday functional parts: brackets, clips, containers and outdoor parts that need to take some load and moisture. It's noticeably tougher than PLA, chemically resistant and easy to print — our most common pick for replacement parts in Vienna homes. Food contact only with certified-grade material and a matched process.

When do I need ASA instead of PETG?

ASA is the right choice when a part lives in sun and weather long-term — balcony brackets, signage or automotive-adjacent parts. ASA is UV-stable, dimensionally stable up to ~95 °C and doesn't yellow. For pure indoor use PETG is enough; for real outdoor use we recommend ASA.

When does TPU make sense?

TPU is rubber-like flexible and non-slip — ideal for seals, phone cases, soles, grips or pads. We print TPU in Vienna at Shore A 95, a good compromise of flexibility and printability. For rigid structural parts TPU is intentionally not the right choice.

Mechanically tough, paintable and glueable.

What is ABS good for?

ABS is worth it for mechanically loaded parts that get sanded, glued or painted — typically housings, brackets and repair parts. It's more heat-resistant than PLA and easy to post-process. For pure outdoor use ASA is the more robust choice, since ABS is UV-sensitive.

When is PET the right choice?

PET is the right pick for transparent parts, containers and packaging prototypes — chemically related to the classic drink bottle. It's tough and easily recyclable. Food contact only with certified-grade material and a matched process. For very fine detail PETG is usually easier to print.

PC (polycarbonate)

Pro material for high load & heat.

When is polycarbonate (PC) worth it?

Polycarbonate is worth it for very high loads and heat — brackets under load, heat-resistant parts up to ~110 °C, or transparent protective parts. PC is the pro filament of the line-up and demanding to print, hence on request. For affordable decor PLA is the better choice.

FAQ on 3D printing materials in Vienna

The questions customers ask most often when choosing a material.

Material guidance

  • Which 3D printing material is right for outdoor use?
    For long-term outdoor use we recommend ASA — UV-stable, dimensionally stable up to ~95 °C, doesn't yellow. PETG works for moderate outdoor exposure but loses color and strength in full sun over time. PLA is not suitable for outdoors.
  • Which material handles heat (car, sun)?
    For hot car interiors and similar heat scenarios we recommend PC or ASA. ABS holds up to ~95 °C but is UV-sensitive. PLA already deforms around ~55 °C — not suitable for a car in summer.
  • What's the difference between PLA and PETG?
    PLA prints especially cleanly and is the first pick for models, decor and gifts — as long as the part doesn't end up in the sun or a hot car. PETG is noticeably tougher, slightly flexible, waterproof and handles light mechanical load. Rule of thumb: PLA for looks, PETG for everyday use.
  • Which material is suitable for food contact or the kitchen?
    Standard food-grade PETG and PET are the usual choice — for trays, containers or baking molds. Important: print layers leave microscopic grooves where bacteria can build up. For direct food contact we recommend smooth interior surfaces, food-safe sealing, or using the part as a mold rather than tableware. Reach out and we'll find the right fit for your case.
  • Can 3D-printed parts be sanded, painted or post-processed?
    Yes. ABS and PLA sand, prime and paint well — we do this regularly for cosplay parts and film props. PETG is a bit tougher to sand, but doable. On request we handle post-processing directly at the shop: sanding, gluing, priming, painting.
  • Which material is the cheapest?
    PLA and PETG are on the same price level and our most affordable materials — both available immediately. The biggest factor on price is rarely the material though, but print time (size and infill). We're upfront when a cheaper material would do the job.
  • What's the difference between PETG and ASA?
    PETG is the tough all-rounder for indoor and moderate outdoor use. ASA is explicitly built for long-term outdoor use — more UV-stable, higher heat resistance, no yellowing. If a part will sit in the sun for a year: ASA.

Walk-in & shop in Vienna

  • Can I drop by without an appointment and print right away?
    Yes — we're a real walk-in shop at Josefstädter Straße 58, 1080 Vienna. During opening hours just come by, we'll look at your project and discuss material, timing and price on the spot. For simple parts same-day is possible if our printers are free.
  • I don't have a 3D file — do you help with the design?
    Yes. We regularly model from photos, sketches, measurements or an old part to create a printable 3D model. Depending on complexity, modelling takes 2–7 working days — you'll get a fixed quote before we start.
  • How long does a print take on average?
    Small standard parts in PLA or PETG are often same-day or overnight. Larger models, small batches or special materials like ASA and PC typically take 1–3 working days. If it's urgent, let us know — we slot in express jobs deliberately.
  • How quickly can I pick up a printed part in Vienna?
    For standard materials like PLA or PETG, same-day and 24-hour prints are routinely possible — depending on size and load. Express options are best discussed in person at the shop in Josefstadt or by email.

Request, files & quantities

  • What do I need to send a request?
    Ideally: a short description of what the part is for, plus either a 3D file or a photo/sketch with measurements. If you have none of that yet, an idea is enough — we'll help with material choice and modelling. You'll get a transparent quote up front.
  • Which file formats can you print?
    We handle all common 3D formats: STL, OBJ, 3MF, STEP/STP. STL and 3MF are our favourites, STEP is ideal if the part comes from CAD. Unsure? Just send what you have — we'll convert if needed.
  • Are there volume discounts for larger orders?
    Yes — often from as few as 2 identical parts, because one-off setup costs (preparation, slicing, file setup) are shared across more pieces. From around 10 parts the discount becomes noticeable, and from 50+ we also optimise material and time slot. Send quantity and file — you'll get a tiered quote back.

B2B & business customers

  • Do you issue invoices for companies?
    Yes — invoices with VAT ID and all required details are standard. On request with PO number, cost centre or monthly summary invoice. Payment by transfer or directly at the shop.
  • Can we order a sample before the small batch?
    Highly recommended. We print a single sample first, you check fit, material and finish — only then we start the batch. Saves correction loops and makes sure the run fits exactly.
  • Do you also print small batches for companies?
    Yes — small batches from 5 to ~500 pieces are our daily business. We provide material recommendation, volume discount, invoice and fixed lead times. Just send us a quick request.
